Rachel Weatherly, director of programming at the South Bend Center for the Homeless, recognizes that for those without permanent shelter, the road to stability is often intimidating. To encourage individuals to keep taking those steps and “give them a chance to see what they could accomplish,” she’s incorporating Bendable into the organization’s three main training tracks—personal, professional and academic. “If they could do one class and see how it goes,” she said, “that could be an encouragement to say, ‘You know what, I can go back to school.’”
